WHO WE ARE

About Us

In 2020, Canada launched the PROTECT project to support institutional reform in Ukraine’s security and defence sector under Global Affairs’ Peace and Stabilisation Operations the Department of National Defence Military Training and Capacity-building Program. The project team works with senior counterparts in the Government of Ukraine to build capacity of institutions to meet internationally accepted standards of governance, performance and accountability.

Drawing on a talented pool of highly specialised Ukrainian and international experts and in lockstep with institutional partners, concrete progress has been achieved on advancing democratic governance and gender equality in the defence sector and improving planning and resource management. PROTECT2 also supports the review of defence capabilities, military needs, and sustainment planning for immediate and longer-term horizons with international partners.

Accelerating Ukraine’s compliance with NATO standards and principles was a central focus for the Government of Ukraine prior to Russia’s full-scale invasion. Since then, commitment to this process has intensified and reforms within the sector continue to support its military performance and resilience.
