PORTRAIT OF OKSANA KRYTENKO

At the heart of the Zhytomyr Military Institute, named after S. P. Koroliov, a quiet but impactful transformation is taking place. It is driven by the tireless efforts of Oksana Krytenko, the Gender Advisor to the Institute’s Head.  At an institution renowned for offering cutting-edge training in space and radio-electronic surveillance, and managing space and unmanned vehicles, she ensures that gender perspectives are seamlessly integrated into every aspect of its activities and culture.

Oksana firmly believes that “Integrating a gender perspective into military education is not achieved through a single action; it requires a comprehensive and coordinated effort across a range of activities.” Her approach is as strategic as it is far-reaching. It includes embedding gender considerations into the Institute’s strategic policies and curricula, implementing global initiatives such as “Women, Peace, and Security,” and ensuring cadets actively participate in extracurricular activities promoting gender equality.

Realizing such ambitious goals requires teamwork and collaboration. Oksana has been instrumental in building synergies between the leadership of the Command of Ground Forces, the Institute, cadets, and local authorities. Her collaboration with the Zhytomyr City Council and the Regional Military Administration, as part of the national implementation of “Women, Peace, and Security”, has strengthened the Institute’s dedication to advancing gender equality locally and nationally.

However, Oksana finds the most rewarding aspect of her work in her direct interactions with future officers. By helping future leaders overcome challenges and addressing their concerns, she ensures that gender equality is not just an idea but a tangible reality of daily life at the Institute. Through her leadership, Oksana is showing how meaningful change can be achieved, one policy, one partnership, and one cadet at a time.
