When the full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022, Iryna felt there was only one path she could take—to join the Armed Forces. Having been an active participant in the Euromaidan movement during the Revolution of Dignity, she carried with her a deep sense of responsibility to defend her country.
Iryna began her military service in the Territorial Defense Forces, where she witnessed firsthand the resilience and courage of Ukraine’s defenders. During her service, Iryna encountered many professional servicewomen, and she heard stories of individuals who had dedicated years to military service but faced a lack of recognition and persistent challenges in advancing their careers. As the full-scale invasion unfolded, more women stepped forward to serve and took on officer positions, they became visible role models—paving the way for others to follow, aspire, and believe in their own potential.
These stories of determination became the driving force behind Iryna’s commitment to her current role, ensuring that the path for those who follow is fairer and more accessible. Recently, Iryna joined the Ministry of Defence and serves as a senior officer for gender equality at the Central Directorate for Protection of Military Personnel. This newly established department, created in April 2024, aims to protect the rights of servicemembers and conduct inspections and investigations into rights violations. Gender quality is one of the key areas of the department among the rights of servicemen and women. Iryna deals with inquiries regarding gender equality and supports the restoration of rights if violations occur.
Iryna’s dedication to advancing gender equality within the Armed Forces reflects her deep belief that both women and men should have equal opportunities to serve, grow, and lead. She takes pride in being part of new institutions that are created to support these efforts. For Iryna, every resolved inquiry and every restored right represents a meaningful shift in the culture and mindset of the Armed Forces.
